Sacred Vishnu katha for moksha and forgiveness of sins.
Nirjala Ekadashi is observed on the Shukla Paksha Ekadashi of the Jyeshtha month and is regarded as one of the most sacred Ekadashis in the Hindu calendar. It is popularly known as Bhimaseni Ekadashi, Pandava Ekadashi, and Nirjala Ekadashi.
According to Hindu tradition, observing the Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat with devotion grants the spiritual merit of all twenty-four Ekadashis observed throughout the year. Since devotees abstain even from water during the fast, it is considered one of the most rigorous and rewarding Ekadashi observances dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
The most famous Nirjala Ekadashi Katha originates from the Mahabharata and narrates how Bhima, the strongest of the Pandavas, received the blessings of all Ekadashi fasts through a single observance.
During the time of the Mahabharata, Yudhishthira, Kunti, Draupadi, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva faithfully observed every Ekadashi fast and worshipped Lord Vishnu with devotion.
Bhima, however, faced a unique challenge.
Blessed with extraordinary strength and a powerful appetite, he found it extremely difficult to remain without food. While he deeply respected religious practices, repeated fasting seemed nearly impossible for him.
One day, Bhima approached Sage Ved Vyasa and respectfully said:
“O revered grandfather, all my brothers and family members faithfully observe every Ekadashi. They encourage me to do the same, but I am unable to tolerate hunger. I can worship Lord Vishnu, perform charity, and engage in righteous deeds, but I cannot fast twice every month.”
Listening to Bhima's concern, Sage Ved Vyasa replied:
“O Bhima, the observance of Ekadashi is highly praised in the scriptures. Those who faithfully observe the Ekadashi fast attain spiritual merit, freedom from sins, and ultimately liberation.”
Bhima folded his hands and spoke honestly.
“O revered sage, I speak the truth. I cannot observe all the Ekadashis throughout the year. Please tell me of a single vrat that can grant the benefits of all Ekadashi fasts.”
Pleased by Bhima's sincerity, Sage Ved Vyasa revealed a sacred secret.
He said:
“In the bright fortnight of the Jyeshtha month comes the sacred Nirjala Ekadashi. Whoever observes this fast without consuming even a drop of water from sunrise on Ekadashi until the following day's Dwadashi receives the merit of all Ekadashis observed throughout the year.”
The sage further explained the greatness of this vrat.
“On this day, one should worship Lord Vishnu, chant the sacred mantra ‘Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya,’ engage in devotion, and avoid all food and water. The spiritual merit earned from this observance is equal to that gained from numerous pilgrimages, sacrifices, and acts of charity.”
Ved Vyasa continued:
“O Bhima, those who faithfully observe Nirjala Ekadashi are protected by the grace of Lord Vishnu. At the end of their lives, they are not approached by the messengers of Yama. Instead, the divine attendants of Lord Vishnu guide them toward the eternal abode of Vaikuntha.”
Hearing these words, Bhima was deeply inspired.
When Nirjala Ekadashi arrived, he observed the fast with complete determination and devotion. Throughout the day, he worshipped Lord Vishnu, engaged in prayer, and maintained the strict Nirjala discipline.
On Dwadashi, he completed the vrat according to the prescribed rituals and performed charity.
By the grace of Lord Vishnu, Bhima obtained the spiritual merit of observing all Ekadashis.
From that day onward, the sacred fast became widely known as **Bhimaseni Ekadashi** and **Pandava Ekadashi**.
Thus, Lord Vishnu blessed Bhima with the fruits of all Ekadashi observances through a single act of sincere devotion.
The Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat Katha teaches that sincerity matters more than difficulty. Even when a devotee cannot perform every religious observance, wholehearted devotion and genuine faith can attract divine grace. The story of Bhima reminds us that determination, honesty, and devotion to Lord Vishnu can lead to spiritual progress and ultimate liberation.
