Sacred Vishnu Ekadashi for transformation and divine blessings.
Parivartini Ekadashi (also known as Parsva Ekadashi or Jaljhulni Ekadashi) falls on the 11th day of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada. 'Parsva' means turning or changing sides. According to Vedic scripture, this day is described as very special. On this day, Lord Vishnu turns to the other side(left) while staying on Ananta Shesha.
Parshwa Ekadashi is also known as Pravartini Ekadashi, Jayanti Ekadashi, Dol Gyaras, Jal Jhulni Ekadashi and Vamana Ekadashi in many areas.
This year, 2026, this festival will be observed on:
Tithi Beginning: On September 21, 2026, at 08:0 PM.
Tithi Ends: On September 22, 2026, at 09:43 PM.
The prana timing: 06:10 AM - 8:35 AM on September 23.
Observing this fast grants the same merit as performing the Vajapeya Yajna. Worshiping Lord Vamana (the dwarf incarnation) on this day liberates a person from all sins and grants them a place in Vaikuntha. It is also believed to bring rain and prosperity to the land.
The Ekadashi Vrat when observed with sincerity leads to salvation, by the virtues earned by devotee. Observing the Parivartini Ekadashi Vrat is one of the best ways to receive the blessings of Lord Vishnu.
During Parivartini Ekadashi fast, devotees typically cease from consuming grains, lentils, certain vegetables, and specific spices. Here are some food items that are usually avoided during this fast:
This is usually the first thing beginners search for. And the answer depends on how strictly someone keeps the vrat.
Some devotees observe Nirjala fasting without water. Others keep a partial fast and eat once. Many people stay on fruits and milk through the day.
Common foods during Parivartini Ekadashi fasting include:
Simple food is preferred. Heavy meals usually defeat the purpose of fasting anyway.
Because of these benefits, Parivartini Ekadashi is considered as one of the most rewarding ekadashi of all the ekadashis.
Charity (Daan) is what actually seals the good karma of your fast. But you should not just give away random things. Since the fast links to Mercury and occurs in peak summer heat, your donations should be related.
Since Mercury rules the colour green, donating whole green mung dal is highly recommended. Give a packet to a local temple or to a poor family. Also, since it is July, handing out earthen pots filled with cold water, giving away umbrellas, or donating cotton clothes to the needy brings immense blessings. Give what you can easily afford, but do it with a full heart.

The story behind Parivartini Kadashi is the incarnation of Lord Vamana. It is explained in the Vedic scriptures like the Bhagavata Purana and Padma Purana.
It was the time when the mighty King Bali, grandson of Prahlada, became the ruler of the three worlds. This was creating an imbalance in the entire universe.
Lord Vishnu took an incarnation as Vamana, a dwarf and young brahmana boy. This avatar was intended to rebalance the universe and bless His devotee.
On time, King Bali was performing a grand yagna to become more powerful. Lord Vamana approached him and asked Him for the three paces of land from His total wealth. Bali didn't deny, as the Vamana was a brahmana. Once the King agreed to do so, Lord Vamana expanded His size and became gigantic.
Furthermore, Vamana covered the entire universe in only two steps. When he left with the last step, He asked Bali where He should put His final step.
King Bali realized that Vamana was his Lord Vishnu, so he asked Him to put His last step on his head.
Pleased by the surrender and humility, Lord Vishnu granted immortality to Bali and made him the ruler of Sutala, the heavenly place which is higher than the place of Indradeva.
