Utpanna Ekadashi is observed on the 11th lunar day (Ekadashi Tithi) of the Krishna Paksha (waning moon phase) in the month of Margashirsha (November-December). The name 'Utpanna' means 'born' or 'originated', as it is believed that on this day, the divine form of Ekadashi, who is the personification of the Ekadashi fast itself, was born from Lord Vishnu. This Ekadashi holds a special significance as it marks the origin of all Ekadashi vratas, making it the foremost among them.

Utpanna Ekadashi Vrat Katha
In ancient times, a terrible demon named Mura emerged, creating chaos and tormenting the Devas (gods) and humans. This demon possessed immense power and waged a fierce war against Lord Vishnu, who was fighting to protect creation. The Devas were in great distress, and the universe trembled under the onslaught of Mura's destructive energy.
Lord Vishnu, witnessing the suffering and the imbalance caused by Mura, decided to put an end to the demon's reign of terror. During their intense battle, Lord Vishnu rested in a cave. From His divine energy, a powerful and beautiful woman emerged, who single-handedly fought and defeated the demon Mura. This divine woman was Ekadashi, the embodiment of the Ekadashi fast, born from Lord Vishnu's own resolve to protect righteousness.
Pleased with Ekadashi's valor and her victory over Mura, Lord Vishnu bestowed a boon upon her. He declared that from that day forward, the fast observed on this specific lunar day would be known as Utpanna Ekadashi, and whoever observes it with devotion would be freed from all sins and attain spiritual liberation. The merit gained from this fast is unparalleled.
