Long ago, a fierce battle broke out between the king of the Devas, Indra, and the mighty demon Vritrasura. The war continued for a long time, and despite the strength of the celestial armies, the Devas were unable to gain victory. Vritrasura possessed extraordinary power and seemed impossible to defeat.
As the battle intensified, fear spread among the Devas. Unable to withstand Vritrasura’s growing strength, they approached their Guru, Brihaspati, seeking guidance and protection.
Brihaspati listened patiently and then revealed a lesser-known truth about Vritrasura.
He told the Devas that Vritrasura was not an ordinary demon. In a previous birth, he had been King Chitraratha, a ruler blessed with great prosperity and influence. One day, while travelling through the celestial realms, Chitraratha arrived at Mount Kailash, the sacred abode of Lord Shiva.
There, he witnessed Lord Shiva seated beside Goddess Parvati. Instead of offering respect, Chitraratha allowed pride to cloud his judgment. Looking at Lord Shiva, he mockingly questioned why the great Mahadev sat affectionately beside His consort in a divine assembly.
His words deeply offended Goddess Parvati.
Angered by his arrogance and disrespect, the Goddess cursed Chitraratha to lose his royal status and be born in a lower form. As a result of that curse, he later took birth as Vritrasura.
However, despite being born as a demon, Vritrasura remained a sincere devotee of Lord Shiva. Through intense penance and unwavering devotion, he earned immense spiritual strength and divine protection.
After revealing this history, Brihaspati advised Indra that ordinary warfare alone would not be enough to defeat such a powerful devotee. If he wished to overcome Vritrasura, he would first need to seek the grace of Lord Shiva.
Following his Guru’s instructions, Indra observed the sacred Guru Pradosh Vrat with complete faith and discipline. He fasted, worshipped Lord Shiva during the Pradosh Kaal, chanted sacred mantras, and prayed sincerely for divine assistance.
Pleased with Indra’s devotion, Lord Shiva bestowed His blessings upon him.
With Mahadev’s grace on his side, Indra once again entered the battlefield. This time, the outcome was different. The strength, courage, and divine protection he received through Guru Pradosh Vrat helped him overcome Vritrasura and restore peace to the heavens.
The Devas rejoiced, and harmony returned to the celestial realms.
Since then, devotees have believed that observing Guru Pradosh Vrat with sincerity can help remove difficulties, grant victory over challenges, and bring the blessings of Lord Shiva into one’s life.
