Haritalika Teej is observed on the Tritiya Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada. It is regarded as one of the most sacred fasts dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Married women observe this vrat for an unbroken marital bliss and the well-being of their husbands, while unmarried girls pray for an ideal life partner. The significance of this vrat is deeply rooted in the extraordinary penance performed by Goddess Parvati, whose unwavering faith ultimately led to her marriage with Lord Shiva.

Once, Lord Shiva gently reminded Goddess Parvati of the extraordinary penance she had performed in her previous birth to attain Him as her husband. Looking at Her with affection, He began narrating the story behind the greatness of Haritalika Teej.

Lord Shiva said, "O Gauri, do you remember the hardships you willingly embraced to obtain Me as your husband? Your devotion was so deep that even today it is remembered as the highest example of faith and determination."

He continued, During your childhood, on the banks of the sacred River Ganga near the Himalayas, you performed severe austerities for twelve long years. Throughout this period, you survived only on dry leaves that had fallen from trees, giving up regular food entirely.

When the bitter cold of the month of Magha arrived, you stood immersed in icy water while continuing your penance. During the scorching heat of Vaishakha, you endured the intense heat of the Panchagni Tapasya. Even during the heavy monsoon rains of Shravan, you remained beneath the open sky without food or water, never allowing your determination to weaken.

Watching his young daughter undergo such severe hardships, your father, King Himavan, was deeply distressed.

One day, seeing both your penance and your father's concern, Sage Narada arrived at your home.

King Himavan welcomed the sage with great respect and asked the purpose of his visit.

Narada replied, "O King, I have come as the messenger of Lord Vishnu. Your daughter has performed extraordinary penance, and Lord Vishnu wishes to marry her. I have come to seek your opinion regarding this proposal."

Hearing these words, King Himavan was overwhelmed with joy.

He said, "If Lord Vishnu Himself desires to marry my daughter, what greater fortune could a father hope for? Every parent wishes to see their daughter blessed with a prosperous and happy married life. I gladly accept this proposal."

Satisfied with the king's approval, Sage Narada returned to Lord Vishnu and informed Him that the marriage proposal had been accepted.

However, when this decision reached your ears, your heart was filled with sorrow.

One of your close companions noticed your sadness and lovingly asked the reason behind it.

You replied, "From the depths of my heart, I have already accepted Lord Shiva as my husband. Yet my father has decided to marry me to Lord Vishnu. I find myself caught in a painful dilemma. I see no path before me except to give up my life."

Your wise companion immediately stopped you.

She said, "Dear friend, giving up your life will not solve anything. Difficult times demand patience, not despair. Once a woman has accepted someone as her husband in her heart, she should remain devoted to that resolve throughout her life. True faith and unwavering devotion can move even the Divine."

She then suggested a way. "Come with me to a dense forest where no one will be able to find you. There you can continue your worship without interruption. I have complete faith that Lord Shiva will certainly accept your devotion."

Trusting your friend completely, you quietly left your home and followed her deep into the forest.

Back at the palace, King Himavan became anxious when he discovered that you were missing.

He thought, "I have already promised my daughter's hand in marriage to Lord Vishnu. If the wedding procession arrives and my daughter cannot be found, I will face unbearable humiliation."

Filled with worry, he ordered an extensive search across every direction.

While your father searched tirelessly, you remained hidden with your companion inside a cave on the bank of a river, completely absorbed in the worship of Lord Shiva.

On the auspicious Tritiya Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada, under Hasta Nakshatra, you fashioned a Shivling from sand and observed the sacred fast.

Throughout the entire night, you remained awake, singing hymns and offering prayers to Lord Shiva with complete devotion.

Your penance became so powerful that it shook My very seat of meditation.

My deep meditation broke, and I immediately appeared before you.

Looking at your unwavering devotion, I said, "O Parvati, your penance has pleased Me greatly. Ask for whatever boon your heart desires."

Overwhelmed with joy, you folded your hands and said,

"Lord, I have already accepted You as my husband in my heart. If You are truly pleased with my devotion, then please accept me as Your wife."

Smiling with compassion, I answered, "Tathastu."

Having granted your wish, I returned to Mount Kailash.

At dawn, after completing your worship, you immersed all the offerings into the river and concluded the vrat along with your companion.

At that very moment, King Himavan, accompanied by his relatives and attendants, finally found you.

Seeing your weakened condition after years of severe penance, his eyes filled with tears.

With great humility, you said, "Father, I have spent much of my life in penance for only one purpose—to attain Lord Shiva as my husband. Since you had decided to marry me to Lord Vishnu, I left home in search of my chosen Lord. I shall return with you only if you promise that my marriage will be performed with Lord Shiva."

Your father's heart melted.

Realising the depth of your devotion and the sacrifices you had made, he accepted your wish without hesitation.

He brought you home, and after some time, your marriage with Lord Shiva was solemnised according to sacred Vedic traditions.

Lord Shiva concluded the narration by saying, "O Parvati, it was because of the vrat you observed on the Shukla Tritiya of Bhadrapada that our marriage became possible. Therefore, any unmarried girl who observes this vrat with complete faith is blessed with a worthy husband, and every married woman who performs it with devotion is blessed with everlasting marital happiness and auspiciousness."

For this reason, Haritalika Teej continues to be observed with immense devotion across India.

On this day, devotees take a sacred vow to observe the fast, wear clean clothes—traditionally in shades of red, yellow, or green—and worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati with flowers, sandalwood paste, sacred rice, bel leaves, dhatura, fruits, sweets, betel leaves, betel nuts, and bridal adornments. Water, milk, and bel leaves are offered to the Shivling, while Goddess Parvati is worshipped with traditional items of adornment.

Listening to or reciting the Haritalika Teej Vrat Katha, staying awake through the night in devotion, singing bhajans, and performing the aarti of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are considered integral parts of this sacred observance.

Even today, Haritalika Teej stands as a timeless reminder that unwavering faith, sincere devotion, and steadfast determination ultimately receive the blessings of the Divine.
