Hariyali Teej is one of the most sacred festivals dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It is observed on the Tritiya Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Shravan. On this day, married women observe a fast for a happy married life, while unmarried girls pray to be blessed with a virtuous husband. The vrat is deeply connected with the divine union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. According to the traditional Hariyali Teej Vrat Katha, it was Goddess Parvati's unwavering devotion, severe penance, and unshakable determination that finally won the heart of Lord Shiva.

Once, Lord Shiva lovingly reminded Goddess Parvati of the extraordinary penance she had performed in her previous birth to obtain Him as her husband.

Lord Shiva said, "O Parvati, your devotion was unlike anything the world had ever witnessed. You endured countless hardships only because your heart had already accepted Me as your husband."

For many years, Goddess Parvati performed severe austerities. She gave up food and water, remained absorbed in meditation through scorching summers, freezing winters, and heavy rains, and never allowed worldly difficulties to weaken her resolve. Every hardship only strengthened her determination to attain Lord Shiva.

Seeing his daughter undergoing such intense penance, King Himavan became deeply worried. Around that time, Sage Narada visited his palace with a proposal.

Narada said, "O King Himavan, Lord Vishnu Himself wishes to marry your daughter. I have come to know your opinion."

The proposal filled King Himavan with joy. Believing there could be no greater fortune for his daughter, he immediately accepted it.

However, when Goddess Parvati learned about this decision, her heart was filled with sorrow. Since childhood, she had accepted Lord Shiva as her eternal husband and could never imagine marrying anyone else.

Unable to hide her grief, she shared everything with one of her closest companions.

Her friend gently advised, "If your devotion is true, then continue your penance with complete faith. The Lord always accepts sincere devotion."

Accepting this advice, Goddess Parvati quietly left her home and entered a dense forest. There, inside a secluded cave, she made a Shivling from sand and began worshipping Lord Shiva with complete dedication.

Meanwhile, King Himavan searched everywhere for his daughter. Messengers travelled across kingdoms, forests, mountains, and even distant regions, but no one could find her.

Completely unaware of the search, Goddess Parvati remained immersed in meditation.

Finally, on the auspicious Tritiya Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Shravan, Lord Shiva became pleased with her unwavering devotion and appeared before her.

Seeing Lord Shiva standing before her, Goddess Parvati folded her hands with deep reverence.

Lord Shiva said, "Your devotion has pleased Me. Ask for any boon."

With complete humility, Goddess Parvati replied, "Lord, from the depths of my heart I have already accepted You as my husband. If You are truly pleased with my penance, then please accept me as Your wife."

Lord Shiva smiled and granted her wish.

"So be it."

With these words, He accepted Goddess Parvati as His future consort before returning to Mount Kailash.

Soon afterwards, King Himavan finally found his daughter in the forest.

Seeing the hardships she had endured, his heart melted with compassion.

Goddess Parvati respectfully told her father, "Father, I shall return home only if you promise that my marriage will take place with Lord Shiva."

Witnessing his daughter's unwavering faith and the immense sacrifices she had made, King Himavan realised that her decision came from true devotion rather than stubbornness.

He accepted her wish.

In due course, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were married according to sacred Vedic rituals. Their divine marriage became an eternal symbol of devotion, faith, and the victory of sincere determination.

While narrating this incident, Lord Shiva told Goddess Parvati that it was this very fast observed on the Tritiya of Shravan that fulfilled her heartfelt desire.

Since then, it is believed that women who observe Hariyali Teej Vrat with faith and devotion receive the blessings of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

Married women pray for a long, prosperous, and harmonious married life, while unmarried girls seek an ideal life partner.

On this day, women traditionally wear green attire, adorn themselves with bangles and bridal ornaments, worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, sing traditional songs, swing on beautifully decorated swings, and celebrate the arrival of the monsoon with devotion and joy.

This sacred vrat continues to remind devotees that unwavering faith, patience, and sincere devotion ultimately lead to the fulfilment of righteous desires.
