Sacred full moon of Dev Deepawali and Tripurari Purnima.
Among the many legends associated with Kartik Purnima, the story of Tripurasura is considered the most important. In fact, this day is also known as Tripurari Purnima because it marks Lord Shiva's victory over the three demon brothers.
According to the traditional katha, after the death of the mighty demon Tarakasura, his three sonsâTarakaksha, Kamalaksha, and Vidyunmaliâresolved to take revenge on the gods. To gain extraordinary powers, they performed severe penance and pleased Lord Brahma.
When Brahma appeared before them and offered a boon, the three brothers first asked for immortality. Brahma refused, explaining that no living being could be made immortal. The brothers then requested something unusual.
They asked for three magnificent citiesâone made of gold, one of silver, and one of iron. These cities would travel across the universe, and their destruction would only be possible if all three aligned in a single straight line. Even then, they could be destroyed only by a single arrow shot by an exceptionally powerful deity.
Brahma granted the boon.
With time, the three brothers became arrogant. Moving freely through the heavens in their celestial cities, they began troubling sages, saints, and even the gods. Their power grew so great that the devas found themselves unable to stop them.
Finally, all the gods approached Lord Shiva and prayed for help.
To protect the universe, Lord Shiva prepared for battle. The scriptures describe a magnificent divine chariot being assembled. The Earth became the chariot, the Sun and Moon its wheels, and various divine forces assisted in the great mission.
A fierce battle followed. Then came the moment for which Lord Shiva had been waiting. The three cities aligned in a single straight line.
Without hesitation, Lord Shiva released one divine arrow.
The arrow pierced all three cities at once, reducing them to ashes. The three demon brothers were defeated, and peace was restored throughout creation.
The gods rejoiced and celebrated the victory by lighting countless lamps. Since Lord Shiva destroyed the three cities known as Tripura, he came to be known as Tripurariâ"the destroyer of Tripura."
It is believed that this divine victory took place on Kartik Purnima. Therefore, devotees remember Lord Shiva's triumph on this day and celebrate it as Tripurari Purnima and Dev Deepawali.
Another sacred legend connected with Kartik Purnima is the story of the demon Shankhasura and Lord Vishnu's Matsya Avatar.
It is said that Shankhasura was a powerful and cunning demon who became a threat to both gods and humans. Determined to disrupt the order of the universe, he stole the sacred Vedas and carried them away into the depths of the ocean.
With the Vedas hidden, religious knowledge began disappearing from the world. Sages could no longer access the wisdom contained within them, and the gods themselves felt weakened.
Seeing the growing disorder, the devas approached Lord Vishnu and sought his protection.
Lord Vishnu soon discovered that Shankhasura had concealed both himself and the Vedas within the ocean. To confront the demon in his own domain, Lord Vishnu assumed the Matsya Avatar, the divine fish incarnation.
A fierce battle took place in the waters. After a great struggle, Lord Vishnu defeated Shankhasura and recovered the stolen Vedas.
The sacred scriptures were then restored to the sages and gods, bringing knowledge and dharma back to the world.
The victory filled the heavens with joy. According to popular belief, the gods celebrated the occasion by lighting lamps and offering prayers. Because of this, many traditions associate Kartik Purnima and Dev Deepawali with Lord Vishnu's triumph over Shankhasura.
This Kartik Purnima Katha teaches that divine wisdom can never remain hidden forever and that righteousness ultimately prevails over ignorance.
Kartik Purnima is also linked with the fascinating story of King Satyavrata, a ruler remembered for his virtue and unwavering determination.
King Satyavrata spent his life performing righteous deeds and ruling his kingdom with justice. Although he was worthy of attaining heaven after death, he desired something extraordinaryâhe wished to enter heaven with his physical body.
To fulfil this wish, he approached Sage Vishwamitra and sought his guidance.
Moved by the king's devotion, Vishwamitra agreed to help him. The sage organized a grand yajna and invoked powerful Vedic mantras. The spiritual force generated by the ritual was so immense that King Satyavrata gradually began ascending toward heaven in his mortal body.
When Indra saw this, he became concerned. According to the cosmic order, no human could enter heaven in a physical body.
As Satyavrata approached the celestial realm, Indra stopped him and cast him back toward Earth.
Falling from the heavens, the king called out to Sage Vishwamitra for help.
Determined to keep his promise, Vishwamitra used his spiritual powers to suspend the king between heaven and earth. Angered by Indra's actions, the sage even began creating an entirely new heaven for Satyavrata.
Seeing the power and determination of Vishwamitra, the gods intervened. Eventually, a solution was reached. Indra granted Satyavrata a divine celestial form and allowed him to dwell in heaven.
Thus, the king's wish was fulfilled without violating the laws of creation.
According to the tradition narrated in this Kartik Purnima Katha, the gods celebrated the occasion with great joy, and the event became associated with the spiritual glory of Kartik Purnima.
