The divine story of Maa Annapurna's blessings.
According to Hindu beliefs, listening to the Margashirsha Purnima Vrat Katha with devotion brings the blessings of Maa Annapurna and ensures that a household never suffers from scarcity. Among the many stories associated with this day, the Maa Annapurna Katha is considered the most important.
Long ago, in the sacred city of Kashi, there lived a Brahmin named Dhananjay. His wife, Sulakshana, was a virtuous and devoted woman. Although the couple possessed good character and lived a simple life, poverty constantly troubled them.
Every day, Sulakshana worried about the future. One day she gently said to her husband, “Swami, how long will we continue living like this? We must find a way to improve our circumstances.”
Her words touched Dhananjay deeply. Determined to seek divine help, he went straight to the temple of Lord Vishwanath and sat in prayer.
Folding his hands before Lord Shiva, he said, “O Mahadev, I do not know elaborate rituals or sacred scriptures. I have come only with faith in your mercy. Please show me a path.”
For several days, Dhananjay remained there without concern for hunger or thirst. Seeing his sincere devotion, Lord Shiva appeared and softly whispered a single word into his ear three times:
“Annapurna... Annapurna... Annapurna...”
When Dhananjay opened his eyes, he was puzzled.
“Who is Annapurna?” he wondered.
As he left the temple, he asked every learned Brahmin he met about the mysterious name. Yet none gave him the answer he sought.
Returning home, he narrated everything to Sulakshana.
Instead of worrying, she smiled and said, “If Lord Shiva himself has given you this mantra, then he will surely reveal its meaning. Do not lose faith. Continue your worship.”
Encouraged by her words, Dhananjay resumed his prayers.
That night, Lord Shiva appeared in a dream and instructed him to travel eastward while continuously chanting the name of Maa Annapurna.
Trusting the divine command, Dhananjay began his journey.
Days passed. He survived on fruits from the forest and water from streams. All the while, he continued chanting the sacred name given by Mahadev.
After travelling for many days, he reached a beautiful lake whose waters shone like silver in the moonlight. Along the banks sat several celestial women performing a sacred vrat.
Again and again they chanted:
“Jai Maa Annapurna.”
Hearing the very name he had been searching for, Dhananjay rushed towards them.
“Devis,” he asked respectfully, “please tell me about Maa Annapurna and this vrat you are observing.”
The celestial women explained that Maa Annapurna is the divine mother who nourishes the entire world. They then described the vrat and its significance.
They told him, “This vrat may be observed by anyone with sincere faith. One may perform it for twenty-one days, or according to one's ability. The devotee must remain truthful, avoid anger, and listen to the sacred katha with devotion.”
When Dhananjay asked about the benefits of the vrat, they replied:
“By the grace of Maa Annapurna, the poor receive prosperity, the childless are blessed with children, the ignorant gain wisdom, and sincere wishes are fulfilled.”
Filled with hope, Dhananjay observed the vrat exactly as instructed.
When the observance was completed, a miraculous sight appeared before him.
From the lake emerged a magnificent staircase decorated with jewels and precious stones.
Chanting the name of Maa Annapurna, Dhananjay descended the shining steps.
At the end of the staircase stood a radiant temple unlike anything he had ever seen.
Inside sat Maa Annapurna upon a divine throne, shining with the brilliance of countless suns. Standing before her was Lord Shiva himself, receiving alms from the Divine Mother.
Overwhelmed with devotion, Dhananjay fell at her feet.
The compassionate Goddess already knew the sorrow hidden in his heart.
Smiling gently, she said, “You have observed my vrat with faith. From today, your hardships will end.”
Maa Annapurna blessed him and inscribed a divine mantra upon his tongue.
In that very moment, wisdom awakened within him.
When Dhananjay returned to Kashi, prosperity gradually entered his life. Wealth increased, respect followed, and the small home that once struggled with scarcity became prosperous.
Relatives and acquaintances who had previously ignored him now surrounded him.
Yet prosperity brought a new challenge.
Influenced by others, Dhananjay eventually entered into a second marriage because he had no children.
Sulakshana endured this sorrow silently.
Time passed, and once again the sacred month of Margashirsha arrived.
Remembering the blessings of Maa Annapurna, Sulakshana requested her husband to continue the vrat.
Dhananjay agreed and began the observance.
However, his new wife knew nothing about the vrat. Consumed by jealousy, she interrupted the worship and even threw away the sacred vrat thread.
Soon the blessings disappeared.
Wealth vanished, misfortune struck, and the household once again fell into hardship.
Realising his mistake, Dhananjay returned to the refuge of Maa Annapurna.
With tears in his eyes, he prayed for forgiveness.
The Divine Mother appeared once more and blessed him.
She assured him that Sulakshana's devotion had pleased her greatly and that better days would soon return.
Before long, the family's prosperity was restored. Sulakshana was blessed with a son, and happiness returned to their household.
From that day onward, Dhananjay and his family remained devoted to Maa Annapurna.
The Goddess filled their home with abundance, and her blessings never left them again.
