Sacred vrat for children's protection and blessings.
Pithori Amavasya, observed on the Amavasya Tithi of the Bhadrapada month, is considered one of the most important occasions for mothers praying for the health, protection, prosperity, and long life of their children. In many regions of India, this sacred observance is also associated with the worship of the Saptamatrikas (Seven Divine Mothers) and the sixty-four Yoginis.
According to traditional beliefs, listening to the Pithori Amavasya Vrat Katha is an essential part of the vrat. The story highlights the power of unwavering faith, maternal devotion, and the compassionate grace of the Divine Mother. It is believed that observing the Pithori Amavasya Vrat, worshipping the Divine Mothers, and listening to the Bhadrapada Amavasya Vrat Katha with devotion brings blessings for children and harmony within the family.
Long ago, in a prosperous village, there lived seven brothers with their families. Their homes were filled with happiness, abundance, and the joyful laughter of children. The seven daughters-in-law of the family were religious and regularly observed various fasts and rituals for the welfare of their loved ones.
Among them, the eldest daughter-in-law was especially devoted to the Divine Mother. Every year, she observed the Pithori Amavasya Vrat with great faith and prayed for the well-being and long life of her children.
However, destiny had prepared a difficult test for her.
The first year she observed the vrat, one of her sons passed away unexpectedly. The loss shattered her heart. Yet despite her grief, she did not allow her faith to weaken. She continued to believe that the Divine Mother would guide her through her suffering.
When the next Pithori Amavasya arrived, she once again observed the vrat with complete devotion. She worshipped the Divine Mothers and prayed for the protection of her family.
But tragedy struck again.
Another son passed away.
The years continued to pass in this painful manner.
Each year, she observed the vrat with sincerity. Each year, she listened to the Pithori Amavasya Katha, offered prayers, and sought blessings for her children. Yet every year brought a fresh sorrow.
One son after another was taken from her.
Her heart carried the burden of unimaginable grief.
The villagers often wondered how she continued to worship despite facing such repeated tragedies. Some admired her devotion, while others questioned why she remained faithful after enduring so much pain.
Yet the mother never lost hope.
She would often say, “If the Divine Mother has given me this trial, she will also give me the strength to endure it.”
Years passed, and eventually all seven of her sons were gone.
The sorrow became almost unbearable.
When her youngest and last remaining son passed away, the grieving mother felt completely broken. She sat beside her child and wept bitterly. Her life seemed empty, and the future appeared dark.
At that moment, the village goddess, revered as the protector of the community, happened to pass by.
Seeing the mother's anguish, the goddess approached her with compassion and asked, “Why is your heart filled with such sorrow?”
Unable to control her emotions, the woman narrated her entire story.
She spoke of her devotion, her prayers, her annual observance of the Pithori Amavasya Vrat, and the heartbreaking loss of each of her sons. Tears flowed continuously as she described the suffering she had endured over the years.
The goddess listened patiently.
Moved by the mother's unwavering faith and devotion, the goddess felt deep compassion for her.
She said, “Your devotion has not gone unnoticed. Your faith has pleased the Divine Mother. Go to the places where your sons were cremated. Sprinkle turmeric there with complete faith and remember the Divine Mother with a pure heart.”
The mother accepted the goddess's words without hesitation.
She visited every place where her sons had been laid to rest. At each location, she offered turmeric, folded her hands in prayer, and remembered the Divine Mother with complete surrender.
Her eyes were filled with tears, but her heart was filled with faith.
After completing the ritual, she returned home.
As she entered her house, she witnessed a sight she could scarcely believe.
Standing before her were all seven of her sons—alive, healthy, and smiling.
For a moment, she thought she was dreaming.
Then tears of joy flowed from her eyes.
She embraced her children and repeatedly thanked the Divine Mother for her boundless grace. The entire village soon learned of the miracle and gathered to witness the extraordinary blessing.
Everyone praised the glory of the Divine Mother and celebrated her compassion toward a devotee whose faith had never wavered.
From that day onward, mothers began observing the Pithori Amavasya Vrat and listening to the Pithori Amavasya Vrat Katha with the belief that sincere devotion, maternal prayers, and the blessings of the Divine Mother can protect children and bring happiness to the family.
The Pithori Amavasya Vrat Katha teaches that true devotion should remain steadfast even during life's greatest challenges. The story symbolizes the strength of a mother's love, the power of patience, and the blessings that arise from unwavering faith. It reminds devotees that sincere prayers, when offered with a pure heart, are never ignored by the Divine.
