What is Hartalika Teej

Hartalika Teej is as a festival devoted to love, devotion, and the sacred union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Hartalika Teej is majorly observed by married women for the wellbeing and longetivity of their husbands. Unmarried women also observe Hartalika Teej to find the ideal partner.

Hartalika means "abduction by female friend". As per vedic texts, GoddIss Parvati followed a strict penance (Tapasya) to marry Lord Shiva. However, her father "Himalya" wanted her to marry Lord Vishnu after Lord Narada's proposal. She explained the situation to her friend and went to forest to continue the penance.

It is believed that on the Tritiya of Shukla Paksha in Bhadrapada month, Goddess Parvati created a Shivalinga with sand and immersed in Lord Shiva's worship.

After seeing the Goddess Parvati's true emotions and strict penance, Lord Shiva appeared before her and agreed for marriage.

Hartalika Teej Vrat and Puja Vidhi

The Puja Vidhi for Hartalika Teej is simple to follow. Although people follow different rituals, we have curated the list of steps that are commonly followed across different regions -

1. Wake up early in the morning.
2. Clean your house.
3. Take a bath and wear green saree with traditional Jewellery. Apply Henna (mehndi) and sindoor (only if you are married).
4. Setup the chowki with a red or white cloth placed over it.
5. Place the idols or images of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha. A lot of people also creates the idols using sand.
6. Light a ghee or oil (mustard oil) deeya on the right side of the chowki.
7. Tie the kalawa on a copper kalash and place it near the chowki.
8. Put betel nut, kumkum, haldi and Ganga jal on the kalash.
9. Take a Sankalp or vow to offer your prayers with sincerity.
10. Start the Puja by reciting the Ganesha Aarti.
11. Offer Ganga Jal to the idols.
12. Read or listen to the Hartalika Teej Vrat Katha.
13. Observe the Hartalika Teej fast (Nirjala fast) during the day. If you are unable to keep nirjala fasts due to health conditions, observe a phalahar vrat (fruit-based fast) with equal devotion.
14. In the evening, offer Araghya to the moon (water mixed with rice and other ingredients). After sighting the moon, break the fast and offer the festive food to family members.

Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh & Bihar

In Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, women gather in groups for satsang, mehendi, and swing rituals. Parks and temples come alive with melas (fairs) and devotional celebrations.

Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh

In Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand, celebrations are often held near rivers or temple ghats. In these states, newly married women are gifted sarees, bangles, and sweets. Women create clay idols of Shiva and Parvati and worship them.

Maharashtra

In Maharashtra, Hartalika Teej is simply known as Teej. Women worship Shiva-Parvati and apply haldi-kumkum, green bangles, and pray for a happy married life.
