Kajari Teej is a festival celibrated by Indian womens primarily in Rajsthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. Kajari Teej is observed 15 days after the Hariyali Teej and 5 days before Krishna Janmashtami. Kajari Teej is associated with love and devotion of a woman towards her husband.

Kajari Teej is also known as "Badi Teej", "Kajali Teej", "Satudi Teej" and "Kajri Teej".

What is Kajari Teej?

Kajari Teej is celebrated on the third day (Tritiya) of Krishna Paksha of the Bhadrapada month (August - September). Kajari Teej is observed to honor Goddess Parvati's devotion and deep penance (meditation) to marry Lord Shiva. It is believed that Goddess Parvati took 108 births and intense meditation for Lord Shiva to finally accept her as his wife.

Kajari Teej is celebrated to strengthen the bond between the husband and wife. Wife prays for the longevity and well being of the husband. While unmarried women celebrate the festival for finding a suitable partner of their wish.

Kajari Teej Puja Vidhi

The Puja Vidhi for Kajari Teej is simple to follow. Although people follow different rituals, we have curated the list of steps that are commonly followed across different regions -

1. Wake up early in the morning.
2. Clean your house.
3. Take a bath and wear green saree with traditional Jewellery. Apply Henna (mehndi) and sindoor (only if you are married).
4. Setup the chowki with a red or white cloth placed over it.
5. Place the idols or images of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha. A lot of people also creates the idols using sand.
6. Light a ghee or oil (mustard oil) deeya on the right side of the chowki.
7. Tie the kalawa on a copper kalash and place it near the chowki.
8. Put betel nut, kumkum, haldi and Ganga jal on the kalash.
9. Take a Sankalp or vow to offer your prayers with sincerity.
10. Start the Puja by reciting the Ganesha Aarti.
11. Offer Ganga Jal to the idols.
12. Read or listen to the Kajari Teej Vrat Katha.
13. Women also worship the neem tree for the protection of their husbands.
14. Observe the Kajari Teej fast (Nirjala fast) during the day. If you are unable to keep nirjala fasts due to health conditions, observe a phalahar vrat (fruit-based fast) with equal devotion.
15. In the evening, offer Araghya to the moon (water mixed with rice and other ingredients). After sighting the moon, break the fast and offer the festive food (typically made up of Sattu) to family members.

Kajari Teej

Kajari Teej falls on the third day of the Krishna Paksha of the Bhadrapada month. It is also known as Badi Teej and is observed for protection from evil and prosperity in life. In 2026. Kajari Teej will be observed on Monday, 31 August.

Hartalika Teej

Hartalika Teej falls on the third day of the Shukla Paksha of the Bhadrapada month. It comes one month after the Hariyali Teej. In 2026, Hartalika Teej will be celebrated on Monday, 14 September.
